  2. Quarterdeck Technical Note

  5.    This technote describes how you can access one of Quarterdeck's
  6. 24 hour electronic Technical Support services.  But first, a little
  7. general and background information.
  8.  
  9.    SmartNet is a network of individual Bulletin Board Systems (BBS)
  10. that exchange messages, questions, answers, and files on a daily
  11. basis.  The SmartNet Network is not like the LAN networks that you
  12. may be familiar with.  SmartNet is currently a three level network.
  13.  
  14.    The International/Administrative Host system of the SmartNet is
  15. The Sound of Music BBS (SOM).  The Sound of Music Bulletin Board
  16. System (SOM) is a system that brings the very latest technologies
  17. to the telecomputing world. SOM has grown to supporting over 1.5
  18. GIGABYTES of online resources including over 10,000 files available
  19. for subscribers of the Sound of Music BBS.
  20.  
  21.    Regional Systems call The Sound of Music every night to exchange
  22. any new information or messages that may have been received during
  23. the day.  There are several regional hubs, each in additional to
  24. exchanging information with SOM, also exchange information with
  25. smaller, individual Bulletin Boards.  There regional hubs usually
  26. have a large user base.  These systems usually have several
  27. incoming lines and require a paid subscription for full access 
  28.  
  29.    Individual bulletin board systems call the closest regional hub
  30. to exchange messages and information that  has been received during
  31. the day.  Most of them have only one or two incoming lines and many
  32. times do not charge subscription fees for access.
  33.  
  34.    By using this method of exchanging messages and information, a
  35. message left on any one of the BBSes on the network is received by
  36. everyone of the BBSes on the network within days.  It also allows
  37. Quarterdeck Technical Support to call one system, currently The
  38. Sound of Music, and reach hundreds of users with technical
  39. bulletins, upgrade information and answers to technical support
  40. questions.
  41.  
  42.    The DESQview product support conference discusses DESQview,
  43. QEMM-386, QEMM-50/60, QRAM, Manifest, and the API programing
  44. interface to DESQview. 
  45.  
  46.   Many users and SysOps have seen the light at the end of the
  47. tunnel after consulting the product support conference that
  48. Quarterdeck participates in.   Quarterdeck is not the only company
  49. that uses SmartNet as an avenue for technical support.
  50.  
  51.    SmartNet has a consortium of manufacturers and software
  52. publishers of both commercially available, and shareware/Public
  53. Domain products working with highly motivated BBS System Operators
  54. (SysOps) and users to provide the highest level of support to users
  55. of represented products.

  57.     SmartNet is such a good resource for computer users that BYTE
  58. magazine wrote of Smartnet and the Sound of Music BBS as a "major
  59. national bbs network and system".  More and more of the industry
  60. resources are recognizing SOM as a vital resource to the industry.
  61.  
  62.    Thee Sound of Music Bulletin Board System (SOM) is the system
  63. that Quarterdeck uses to distribute it's information on SmartNet. 
  64. This information is sent to any SmartNet system that carries the
  65. DESQview product support conference.  Although the following
  66. information is for The Sound of Music ONLY, we encourage you to
  67. call the closest SmartNet BBS (listed at the end of this note). 
  68. Rules and regulations of individual may vary from system to system. 
  69. Subscription information may also vary from system to system.
  70.  
  71.     As of January 1, 1990, ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTIONS to SOM are $50.00
  72. per calendar year.  This brings the cost to you of less than $1.00
  73. per week.  SOM has also implementing a NEW TRIAL subscription for
  74. a 3 month period for $25.00.  This trial subscription will offer
  75. a 40 minute per day with a byte limitation of 500,000 bytes per
  76. day.

  78.    There are presently two FREE PUBLIC ACCESS NODES to the Sound
  79. of Music BBS which are accessed at (516) 536-8723.  Public access
  80. limits downloading to the first 90 days online.  Thereafter, the
  81. trial user is expected to subscribe to the Sound of Music BBS in
  82. one of several categories defined below.  These public nodes are
  83. available for accessing all of the conferences of the system. Many
  84. features of the system are only available to subscribers of the
  85. system.  The public nodes only support 1200/2400 bps modems.  9600
  86. bps is only available on subscriber nodes.
  87.  
  88.    FULL YEAR SUBSCRIPTION:  $50.00/calendar year with
  89. full access to all forums, doors, conferences and file
  90. directories with NO restrictions to number of files downloaded with
  91. a 1 megabyte daily download limit and a daily online
  92. limitation of 3 hours per day.
  93.  
  94.     TRIAL 90 SUBSCRIPTION:  $25.00/90 day period with
  95. full access to all forums, doors, conferences and a file
  96. directories with a daily byte limitation of 500,000
  97. bytes/day and a daily online time of 40 minutes.
